Refugees without Refuge

Migration as Escape when Asylum and Refugee Protection Fail

Written with Lauren Carruth and illustrated by Djiboutian artist Moussa Ali Miguil, this book follows migrants across the Horn of Africa for whom asylum and refugee protection have broken down, from the perspectives of people on the move and the people who help them escape. It combines ethnographic scholarship, storytelling, and artwork to look anew at refugees, and the international organizations and governments that purport to assist and protect them.

African Perspectives on South-South Migration

While much attention continues to fall on migration from the global South to the global North, the vast majority of migration is South-South. Co-edited with Meron Zeleke, this volume centers the flow of people, money, skills, and knowledge in Africa, and casts a light on the experiences and agency of migrants throughout the continent.

Making Citizens in Africa

Ethnicity, Gender and National Identity in Ethiopia

A study of the creation and expansion of what I call ‘meaningful citizenship,’ which involves not only the documents states grant or withhold, but the everyday activities of being a citizen. Tracing how language, ethnicity, and gender have shaped national identity in Ethiopia, this book offers a fresh perspective on political development and the “right to have rights” across Africa.
